On Tererems

The tererems are a type of chant that is sung in Greece, at Mount Athos or in Orthodox Serbia during the service, and more especially in chants dedicated to the Saviour, such as Holy God or the Kheruvik, or in chants dedicated to the Mother of God. In the course of research information and indications as to the purpose and use of the tererems was found in a manuscript existing at Bucium Monastery, which was written by Onufrie Bratu, a known calligrapher, copyist and psaltes. The text giving these explanations is to be found at the beginning of the manuscript, and represents a translation from Greek into a beautiful Romanian language with a charming old flavour.
