Concerning Church Singing on the Basis of Scriptural, Patristic and Canonical Sources is a recapitulation of the considerations fundamental to understanding the importance of church singing, residing in its being the manifestation of prayer that is sung before God in a proper manner. A succinct collection of recommendations originating in the holy fathers of the early Church creates an overall profile of an æsthetics of church singing as understood and propagated over the centuries by the Orthodox Church. Musical considerations are given from the thresholds of the new millennium as to the need to withold the original symbiosis of collective singing and prayer in order to provide the adequate means for sustaining the religious feeling during the service, and current choral practice is reviewed.
