An Introduction to Byzantine Hymnographic Poetry
An Introduction to Byzantine Hymnographic Poetry focusses on a question recurring practically with every researcher or performer of Eastern chant, namely whether it would still be possible nowadays to return to the original chant, that introduced in early Christianity by the church fathers during the golden age of Byzantine arts. The question itself is prompted by the observation that, while hymnography remained practically unchanged over the centuries, and with it - goes the assumption - the intensity of religious feeling, music itself underwent diverse changes which culminate in today's appearance of dissolution seen by the author of this paper particularly in the abandonment of diatonicity for chromatic deviations.
